The municipality of Maia is located in the Norte region of Portugal. The municipality boasts a population of 135,049 inhabitants (2011) and is spread out over 83.7 square kilometers of land. The municipality is comprised of 17 parishes, including Aguas Santas and Pedroucos. This municipality is possibly one of the most industrialized throughout the entire region.

Some places to visit while in Maia include the Maia Zoo and the St Cruz Farm to taste the wine. The municipality is also well known for its contemporary architecture. Other places to visit include the Museum of History and Ethnology, St Maria Church, and the Douro River where there are daily cruises available.

Maia is serviced by the Francisco de Sa Carneiro Airport (OPO), informally known as the Porto Airport. It is located approximately 5.65 kilometers from the center of the city. It is the third busiest airport throughout Portugal based on all aircraft operations and the third busiest airport in terms of passengers.  Airlines that regularly service this airport through domestic, international, and charter flights include Air Berlin, EasyJet, Iberia, Lufthansa, Luxair, Ryanair, SATA International, Swiss International, and TAP Airlines.
