Barcelos is a city located in the Norte region of Portugal. It boasts a population of 20,625. It was originally known as a Roman settlement and become the seat in the fifteenth century of the First Duke of Braganca. While the palace built for the dukes was destroyed during an earthquake in the eighteenth century, today it is a beautiful open air museum.

The city is known for its symbol – the rooster, called in Portuguese “O Galo de Bracelos,” or “The Rooster of Barcelos.” There are many stories behind this symbol and can be seen today on many handicrafts, something which the city is known for.

Some of the things to see while in Barcelos include the Watchtower of Barcelos, which is a granite construction made into a basic square. It was a jail in 1595 but today is a craft center as well as a national monument. There is also the Romanesque – Gothic Parish Church of St. Mary Major, the medieval Bridge over the river Cavado (another national monument) and the Baroque Church of Jesus Christ of the Cross. Lastly, there is the Palace of the Counts of Barcelos. This Gothic inspired palace was built in the early fifteenth century and today is home to the Archaeological Museum of Barcelos.

Barcelos is serviced by the Francisco de Sa Carneiro Airport (OPO), informally known as the Porto Airport. It is located approximately 32.18 kilometers from the center of the city.
